Hello Chihuahua parent!
My name is Jules Harris and I am a proud parent of four rescue Chihuahuas. Their names are Katy, a deerhead Chi, who will turn 13 in May, Roscoe, who’s an applehead Chihuahua, and is four years old; Ike, another deerhead and a very beautiful color of red with green eyes – he is also four, and Kissy, our most recent rescue, who is another applehead. She will turn eight years old in April.
As I stated all of our Chihuahuas are rescue dogs. I am a firm believer in adoption rather than buying dogs. There are so many dogs euthanized in our country in various shelters. According to the ASPCA, approximately 1.5 million shelter animals (dogs and cats) are euthanized each year (retrieved March 31, 2017, from https://www.aspca.org/animal-homelessness/shelter-intake-and-surrender/pet-statistics). Unfortunately, many of these dogs are Chihuahuas. They are third in the list of the most 15 common dog breeds found in shelters, according to iHeartDogs.com (retrieved 03/31/17 from http://iheartdogs.com/15-most-common-dog-breeds-found-in-shelters/).
So for me and my husband, the only choice when it comes to adding a family member to our pack is rescue. There are many wonderful rescue organizations that can help you find the best pet for your family. Choose carefully, as this is a lifetime commitment!
I got my first dog when I was just five years old. Her name was Tina, and she was about six months old. She was a Chihuahua mix. Her previous owners were an elderly couple, and according to them, the reason they were giving her up was that she just had too much energy for them to handle! One of the things they told my parents when we picked her up was “if she goes and sits in front of the freezer, that means she wants some ice cream” – talk about spoiled!!
So there are many more stories to share of the wonderful Chihuahuas I’ve had over the years. But I’ll save those for future posts. Suffice to say, I love Chihuahuas and will do my best to provide quality information here to help keep your Chihuahua healthy and happy!
