4th of July and your Dogs

Our nation’s birthday celebration is right around the corner.  I don’t know about your dogs, but the noise of fireworks really stresses my Chihuahuas out.  They tremble and shake and are pretty miserable the whole time those noisy fireworks are going off.

Does this sound familiar?  I admit, when I was a kid, I loved the 4th of July celebrations.  My family and I lived in northern Indiana, and there was always a huge fireworks display down by Lake Michigan.  We would all pile in the car and drive down by the lake and find a premium parking spot and prepare to watch the amazing show.  It was fun!  And so beautiful!

As I grew older and became responsible for my own dogs, I soon realized what a stressor fireworks are for dogs.  I saw how miserable they were while the neighbors were shooting off bottle rockets and firing off cherry bombs.  My little Tigger would hide under the bed and it seemed like there was nothing I could do to comfort him.  He didn’t want to be held or petted, he just wanted to hide.  I felt so bad for him.

I did get lucky with my next Chihuahua, Leo.  He didn’t seem to be fazed by the noise of the neighborhood fireworks at all.  It’s interesting, how some dogs are not bothered by the noise, and others just get so upset.

i’ve seen commercials for the Thunder Shirt, and I’ve often thought of trying that to see if it actually does help keep them calm.  I haven’t ever done that though.  If you have and have a comment on the effectivity of them, please feel free to leave a comment here.

There are some natural products you can buy to help keep your Chihuahuas calmer during this rough time of year.  Take a look at these products and see what you think.

Dr. Harvey’s Relax Stress & Tension

Dr. Harvey’s Relax Stress & Tension Dog Supplement 7 oz
from: Only Natural Pet

I’m going to buy the supplement and see if it helps my little ones this year.  It really bothers me to see them so upset and I’m hopng that these supplements will help calm their nerves.

I’ve gotten so that I don’t enjoy fireworks in the neighborhood anymore because of how it affects my four-legged babies.  I hope you have an enjoyable holiday and keep your dogs calm and stress free!

Love your pets!
